Is Pet Adoption Right For You and Your Family?

adult-cat-adoptAre you thinking about getting a pet? Has your little girl been begging for a kitten for the last few years and you’re just not sure what to do? There are so many wonderful reasons to have a pet – trust us, we write about it all of the time – but the simple fact is that not everyone is ready for the responsibilities of pet ownership. You have to know what you are getting yourself into.

There are numerous positive things that a dog or cat can bring into your life – including unconditional love. There are also a few not-so-awesome things he or she might provide, like hairballs or diarrhea! Taking the time to think and evaluate your current situation will help you make the right decision.

Things to ask yourself before adopting a pet:

  • Do you need a fenced in backyard?
  • How often do you travel?
  • Can you afford shots, health care products and hospital bills if something goes wrong?
  • Do you have any other pets? If so, will they get along?
  • Does your apartment complex allow animals? Find out exactly what their rules and regulations are.
  • How often will you be able to take your dog for a walk?
  • Will you need to purchase doggy daycare or get a pet sitter?
  • Do you mind picking up after a pet goes to the bathroom outside or in a litter box?
  • What type of environment has this pet been in or exposed to?
  • Will his or her personality fit in with your family?

Pets are amazing creatures and adopting one can be the best experience of your life. However, many people adopt a pet only to find themselves in a situation they did not expect. Weigh all of the pros and cons before taking a pet home. Talk to all parties involved and make sure everyone is on board with the idea. Do you have someone in your life that is allergic? These are all things to take into consideration. Remember that it is a huge responsibility. Even if your child says they will take care of them, you may end up with the bulk of the work. Be prepared for anything!

Good luck and we hope you make the right decision.
