Essential Pet Blog

Welcoming a new puppy into your home means having a constant walking companion, lots of cuddle sessions, puppy kisses, and trips to the dog park. Bringing a new puppy into your home also means it’s time to go shopping! If you’re a first-time puppy parent, walking into the pet store might be a little overwhelming. With aisles and aisles of toys, bowls, leashes, beds and cleaning solutions, it is not uncommon to find yourself unsure of what your new puppy needs. We’ve got you covered with essentials to keep them safe, comfortable, and happy.

For Their Comfort

Providing your new puppy their own space, their home within your home, is essential. This spot will offer them comfort and help them feel safe when you are away.

Crate

Crate training is typical when you’re bringing a new puppy into your home. Crates not only help prevent potty accidents, but they also keep your puppy safe from getting into and ingesting things in your home that can be dangerous for them. You will need to ensure that the crate is large enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around, and lay down.

Gate

If you’d prefer not to use a crate for your new family member, a gate is a great alternative. With a gate, you can provide your puppy a little more freedom and space while still keeping them contained and safe.

Bed

Just like you and me, your puppy is going to want a soft, cozy spot to curl up and relax. You can place their bed in your bedroom, next to your bed for nighttime, and if you plan to allow your new addition to sleep in your bed at night, their bed will provide them comfort during the day while you are away.

Food and Water

Mealtime will probably be one of your puppy’s favorite times of the day (second to playtime), you will need to ensure that you have a separate bowl for food and water. Standard dog bowls will get the job done; however, if your pup is a speedy eater, you can slow them down with a slow eating pet bowl, and if you have a large puppy an elevated pet bowl is an excellent option, so they don’t have to strain their necks to eat and drink.

Safety

Taking your puppy for a walk or to the dog park can be just as exciting for you as it is for them, but before leaving home, they’ll need the proper accessories.

Bungee Leash

This leash does it all! It features a spring factor that absorbs the pulling shock, which is excellent while teaching your puppy how to walk on a leash, without giving you both whiplash. The leash comes with an adjustable waist belt allowing for hands-free walks, and for crowded situations, the two built-in control handles make it easy to keep your pup close.

Harness

Until your puppy is fully trained to respond to commands, a harness is the safer option when compared to a collar. Harnesses are more challenging to get out of, and don’t choke your puppy like a collar would if they decide to chase after a squirrel or neighborhood friend!

ID Tag

In addition to a microchip your puppy should always have an ID tag on their harness or collar. With the help of an ID tag, everyone will know your new best friend’s name and, most importantly, their emergency contact information so they can find their way back home if needed.

For the Clean-Up

Now that your puppy is ready for a walk, we need to make sure you are!

Poop Bags

As a dog parent, your duty is to pick up the doody! Keeping a holder with poop bags on your leash is the easiest way to ensure that you always have a way to clean up their poop when “doody calls.”

Keep it Clean

Even though your pup might not like it, keeping them clean (bath time and teeth brushing) is a must.

Shampoo & Conditioner

All puppies and their skin are unique, so it might take a few times to figure out which products are best for their skin.

Dental Care

Dental health is incredibly important for dogs, and items like finger brushes, toothbrushes, and toothpaste are essential in maintaining the health of their mouth and teeth

Just in Case

Both boo-boos and potty accidents happen. It’s a great idea to have pee pads, enzyme cleaner, and a first aid kit on hand.

The Fun Stuff

We saved the best for last! Few things are cuter than watching your puppy’s excitement as they run around with and chew on their new toys. From chew toys to plush toys to interactive toys, there is something for every puppy personality!
