Homemade Pill Pockets

The Paw Print

Essential Pet Blog

The life of a pet parent is equal parts; don’t eat that, combined with PLEASE eat this. The second part comes into play, especially when attempting to medicate our pups, and nothing is worse than having to force a pill down your dog’s throat, particularly when they’re already not feeling their best.

There are plenty of store-bought pill pockets; however, some contain ingredients that may not agree with your pup’s digestion, and top of that, they can get expensive very quickly. But with homemade pill pockets, you can save time, money and enjoy a fun (and tasty) activity with your pup by making them at home.If you’re looking for a quick, no-bake pill pocket, there are a few options made from ingredients you probably already have in your pantry or refrigerator. All you need to do is make a mental list of your pups favorite snacks and decide which ones can easily disguise a pill, here are a few of our favorite treats that can easily be formed into a ball to hide a pill or you can push a pill into the center.

  • Peanut butter
  • Hot dog pieces
  • Penne Pasta
  • Banana
  • Pieces of cooked meat
  • Cubed cheese
  • Baked sweet potato

If you’d like to make your pup feel extra special (who doesn’t?), these homemade no-bake pill pocket options are for you.

If your pup takes medication frequently, the novelty of these pill pockets might wear off, so rotating the recipes to change up the flavors is a good idea. For example, you can add a bit of ground meat, yogurt, shredded cheese, or canned tuna or chicken to either of the recipes. Using chicken or beef broth instead of milk is also an option to give these homemade pill pockets a whole new flavor.
